Welcome

Are you the founder of a family business, head of a second-generation business, a spouse, sibling or manager in a family business and concerned about preserving harmony in the family, leadership succession, or the legacy of the family and the business?

Or are you a professional, small business owner or entrepreneur who is good at what you do, but find that running a business is something altogether different?

Are you like Mary G. who worked for a large company? She received frequent recognition for her work. She was given awards and was taken to lunch. She felt she could “do it better” and started her own business.
She is now struggling to balance doing the work, managing the paperwork, getting paid and developing new clients. She seems always to be behind on jobs and no one is taking her to lunch anymore.

Or Mary H., spouse of the founder of the family business, who
feels all four children should share equally in the business though two have careers elsewhere.

Or Bob P. who started a professional services firm with an eye on creating equity in the business that would allow him to sell his business eventually, but he had
never received training on how to run a business.

And James T. whose
uncle delegated tasks but no ability to make decisions before un-officially retiring and who periodically “checks-in” creating more havoc than not, as the firm declines, because both lack experience of a successful succession process.

Are you creating equity in your business or do you simply have a job?
Are you running a business but find that you have less energy, less productivity, and more problems? Is the only equity in the business what you put into it daily with your knowledge and presence?  Are you looking to develop the next generation's ability to grow and pass the business to their children?

You want a business that works for you rather than you working for the business. You want to be sure that the work you put into your business produces more rewards than if you worked for someone else. You want a business that:

  • Does not require your constant attention to produce results.

  • Frees you to work on and grow your business consistent with your long-term goals and the legacy that is important to you.

  • Has meaning and purpose.

  • Allows you to have balance and more enjoyment in your life.

You want to be like Mike B. who proudly told me how he was introduced by his leadership team to a new client of his business that they were solely responsible for bringing in and were responsible for servicing.

Our clients have found:

  • Their businesses no longer run their lives. They now run their businesses.

  • They now have a plan for creating long-term equity for themselves rather than having a job they call a business.

  • They have increased productivity and profit.

A STEWARDSHIP PERSPECTIVE IN A FAMILY BUSINESS

Actually and as a metaphor, wine is classic—it improves with age and doesn’t go out of style. Winemaking families are some of the world’s oldest family companies. Nineteen family businesses from nine countries have continued for more than two centuries as producers of wine, beer, sake or liquor. One of the “youngest”, the Mexican tequila company Jose Cuervo, was founded in 1758; the oldest, France’s Château de Goulaine, dates all the way back to 1000.

It is estimated, however, that less than a third of all family businesses make it to the second generation. So the odds that a family enterprise will survive to the 46th generation, like Japanese innkeeper Houshi Onsen are long indeed. There appears to be no universal formula for family companies to survive even 125 years, but there are proven best management practices that can help a family past the proverbial third-generation collapse - one being a stewardship perspective that the role of company's leader is to bring the family business from predecessor to successor, while strengthening the family and business in the process.
